Transistor characteristics refers to a graph that shows how changing current through a transistor affects the voltage.

There are two types of transistor characteristics which are:

• INPUT CHARACTERISTICS &
• OUTPUT CHARACTERISTICS.

Input characteristics has a graph that looks very much like option B, but output characteristics has a graph which looks much like option D. In this question we assume the examiner actually meant output characteristics.

Please note that semiconductors like diodes and transistors are non-ohmic, that is, they do not obey ohm’s law, and so their characteristic graph will not feature a straight line but a curve, so, options A and C are ruled out.

Option D becomes the answer when we consider what is called the output characteristics of a transistor.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

1. Option A is incorrect. transistors are semiconductors which do not completely obey ohm’s law, and so, their behavior is expected to be a curve and not a straight line.
2. Option B is incorrect. that is if we assume the examiner meant output characteristics.
