Hydrocarbons which will react with Tollens reagent conform to the general formula

Hydrocarbons which will react with Tollens reagent conform...

QUICK ANSWER…

C

SOLUTION

Tollens reagent, also known as ammoniacal silver nitrate, is a reagent majorly used to differentiate between aldehydes and ketones.

Tollens reagent can also be used to differentiate between alkynes and other aliphatic hydrocarbons.

While this reagent reacts with terminal alkynes like ethyne, prop-1-yne, but-1-yne, pent-1-yne, and so on…, to form silvery precipitate; alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and non terminal alkynes like but-2-yne, pent-2-yne, hex-3-yne and so on.. do not react with it.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Option A is incorrect. all alkenes do not react with Tollens reagent.
  2. Option B is incorrect. all alkanes do not react with Tollens reagent.
  3. C is correct. Terminal alkynes react with Tollens reagent to give a silvery precipitate.
  4. D is not the correct answer. Alcohols do not form a precipitate with it.

QUICK TIPS…

You may please note these/this:

  • Please note that aldehydes and terminal alkynes are the organic compounds that give a positive reaction to Tollens reagent.
