If line p = 5x + 3 is parallel to line p = wx + 5 find the value of w

  • A. 3
  • B. 5
  • C. 6
  • D. 7

QUICK ANSWER…

B

SOLUTION

For parallel lines, the slope of one is exactly the same to that of the other.

The general equation of a straight line is:

y = mx + c

where m = slope (gradient) of the line, and c = intercept on y axis.

Therefore, the slope m of another line which is parallel to the first line is also = m

To solve the above question,

The slope of the line p = 5x + 3 is 5

Therefore, the equation of another line which is parallel to it is p = 5x + c, hence, w = 5.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Option A is incorrect.
  2. Option B is correct.
  3. C is incorrect.
  4. D is not the correct answer.

KEY-POINTS…

You may please note these/this:

  • Two parallel lines share the same slope or gradient.
  • Perpendicular lines do not share the same slope.
  • If the slope of a line is m, then the slope of another line which is perpendicular to it = -1/m
