In a school of 150 students, 80 offer French while 60 offer Arabic and 20 offer neither. How many students offer both subjects?

In a school of 150 students, 80 offer French while 60 offer Arabic and 20 offer neither. How many students offer both subjects?

Addition of all elements of this Venn diagram should give the total number of students in the school.

French only + French and Arabic + Arabic only + neither = total number of students

(80 – x) + (x) + (60 – x) + 20 = 150

 80 – x + x + 60 – x + 20 = 150

160 – x = 150

160 – 150 = x

10 = x

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Option A is correct.
  2. Option B is incorrect.
  3. C is incorrect.
  4. D is not the correct answer.

  • Always remember to start filling the number that involves all sets before deriving others.
  • What am trying to say here is that you should firstly fill in the number that offer both subjects first, and then derive others by simply subtracting it from their values. This is demonstrated above when x was firstly filled in as the assumed number of those who offer both, and the this x is subsequently subtracted from other given numbers to arrive at the venn diagram.
