IS GRAPHITE AN ELEMENT?

The short answer is no, graphite is not the name of any of the elements in the periodic table, rather it is an allotrope of an element called carbon.

Now allotropy is the natural existence of an element in different physical forms.

Carbon as an element exists in different allotropes which include:

  • Diamond
  • Graphite
  • Fullerenes
  • Graphene
  • Lonsdaleite
  • Q-carbon
  • Carbine
  • Carbon nanotubes
  • Buckyballs
  • Charcoal
  • ETC.

Technically speaking, all substances are made up of one or more elements. Thus graphite can be identified as a form of an element called carbon.
Thus, graphite is a pure carbon existing in a different physical state.

IS GRAPHITE AN ELEMENT, COMPOUND, OR MIXTURE?
