Which of the following characteristics of a wave is used in the measurement of the depth of the sea?

A. Diffraction

B. Reflection

C. Refraction

D. Interference

To measure the depth of sea, a device called echo sounder is used to measure the time taken for the echo of a reflected sound wave to return.

The echo sounder sends some sound waves into the sea, after some time, the sound waves get reflected at the seabed and returns as an echo. The time taken for this sound to return is measured and used to calculate the depth of the sea.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Option A is incorrect.
  2. Option B is correct. sound waves sent into the sea gets reflected back as echo whose time of return is used to calculate the depth of the sea.
  3. C is incorrect.
  4. D is not the correct answer.

You may please note these/this:

  • An echo sounder measures the depth of sea by determining the time taken for the reflected sound wave to return to the surface. The depth of the sea is calculated thus, depth = (speed of sound in water)/(2 X time taken for wave to return).
