Which of the following is a characteristic of wind-pollinated flower?

A. flowers lack nectar

B. flowers are conspicuous

C. flowers have perianths

D. flowers are bisexual

QUICK ANSWER…

A

DETAILS…

Pollination involves the transfer of pollen grains from anthers to stigmas. Various methods can naturally be used to do this, they are: wind, water, insects, animals and so on… different species of plants develop flowers which bear characteristics that aids any of the methods above.

For wind pollinated flowers, the pollen grains must be light, massively produced; the anthers loosely attached, no need for attractive colors and nectar, loosely hung stigmas, and no need for attractive scents.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Nectar is necessary for insect pollinated flowers and not wind pollinated ones, as they attract insects craving their juices. so, A is quite correct.
  2. Conspicuous flowers are bold flowers that usually draw the attention of insects; not required in wind pollinated flowers. B is incorrect.
  3. Perianths are enveloping structures that protects the reproductive organs and attract insects, it could to an extent hinder wind pollination. So, C is also incorrect.
  4. D is also incorrect; wind pollinated flowers are unisexual and not bisexual.
