Which of the following is a sex-linked character?

A. sickle-cell anemia

B. tongue rolling

C. skin colour

D. colour blindness

QUICK ANSWER…

D

DETAILS…

Remember that men have XY chromosomes while women have XX chromosomes. Sex-linked characters are traits that are domiciled in the Y chromosome. To put it simpler, sex-linked characters are characters that are found to be more prevalent in a particular sex.

For instance, colour blindness is a defect found to be contained in the Y-chromosome, it is common mostly in men.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. A is not the right answer. sickle-cell anemia is not sex-linked, this is because it is caused by improper genotype which is SS, and not chromosomes.
  2. B is incorrect. tongue rolling ability is not exclusively on the Y-chromosome.
  3. C is incorrect. both male and female can share same skin colour.
  4. D is correct. colour blindness is found mostly in men.

KEY-POINTS…

You may please note this/these:

  • Colour blindness is a condition where the eye is unable to properly distinguish between green and red, or blue and yellow.
  • It is mostly common among men.
