Which of the following is most strongly deflected by a magnetic field?
A. β-particles
B. χ-particles
C. γ-rays.
D. χ-rays
QUICK ANSWER…
A
DETAILS…
Generally speaking, electromagnetic waves are not deflected by magnetic and electric fields. But any charged particle like beta particle, which are negatively charged, can be deflected by a magnetic or electric field.
Now for the right answer to the above question:
- Option A is correct.
- Option B is incorrect.
- C is incorrect. gamma rays are electromagnetic waves which are neutral, and so, cannot be deflected by both electric and magnetic fields.
- D is not the correct answer. X-rays are also electromagnetic and neutral.
DETAILS…
You may please note these/this:
- All electromagnetic waves are electrically neutral, and so, cannot be deflected by either magnetic or electric fields.
- Any charged particle like electron, beta, alpha, and proton, can be deflected by both electric and magnetic fields.
