Which of the following pollutants will lead to the depletion of ozone layer?

  • A. Chlorofluorocarbons
  • B. Carbon (ii) oxide
  • C. Hydrogen sulphide
  • D. Sulphur (iv) oxide




The ozone layer is the layer made up of triatomic oxygen molecules which protects the earth’s surface from burning ultraviolent solar radiations.

A number of pollutants could attack and deplete this ozone layer thereby increasing the phenomenon of global warming and endangering life on earth.

Some of the top ozone layer destroyers are the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, bromofluorocarbons and hydrobromofluorocarbons.

Now for the right answer to the above question:

  1. Option A is correct. Chlorofluorocarbons, which are often a by product of refrigerants, are chief destroyers of our ozone layer.
  2. Option B is incorrect. carbon monoxide does not destroy ozone layer, they do not even stay unoxidized for too long in the atmosphere. 
  3. C is incorrect. hydrogen sulphide does not attack ozone layer, it’s rotten egg smell may pollute the surrounding, but this does not translate into an attack on the ozone layer.
  4. D is not the correct answer. Sulphur dioxide does not directly attack ozone layer, it may indirectly do so, but chlorofluorocarbons are more aggressive in attacking the ozone layer.
